Canberra will put $30 million towards building a cableway at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

The federal government will invest $30 million towards a cableway at Tasmania's Cradle Mountain, as the Braddon by-election gathers steam.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was in the state's northwest on Wednesday, where he announced the commitment to improve facilities at one of the state's tourist hotspots.

"It's been under discussion for quite some time now, but obviously, the timing is very appropriate given that at long last we're actually having a by-election in Braddon," he told reporters.
