Former Howard government minister Jocelyn Newman will be farewelled at a state funeral in Canberra.

Mrs Newman, a Tasmanian senator from 1986 to 2002, died peacefully at Berry on the NSW south coast on Easter Sunday, aged 80.

Former prime minister John Howard will be among mourners paying tribute to the former family and community and social services minister at Duntroon's Anzac Memorial Chapel in Canberra on Friday.

Mrs Newman entered parliament in 1986, building a reputation as a tough-talking Tasmanian Liberal senator.

She fought off uterine and breast cancer before serving as the family and community services minister in the Howard government between 1998 and 2001.

Mrs Newman was also social security minister from 1996 to 1998.

Before entering parliament, she spent 14 years as an army wife to her late husband, Kevin, who was environment minister in the Fraser government.

Her son Campbell was Queensland premier from 2012 to 2015.
