Melbourne is the live music capital of the world and attracts more people than the AFL, new data shows.

About 17.5 million people attended music gigs in Melbourne in 2017, compared to 4.66 million people attending an AFL match, the results of the second Melbourne Live Music Census found.

The results, published on Thursday, confirmed Melbourne as the live music capital of the world, with more music venues per person than any other city on Earth, census organisers, RMIT and inner city councils said.
