Data breach reports soar, 34,000 affected

April 11, 2018

A number of local companies, including health care providers, have lost private client data.

The number of organisations admitting they've exposed or lost the personal information of Australians has increased five-fold in recent months.

Health service providers made up a quarter of all admissions, while a significant proportion came from companies in legal, accounting, management and financial services, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said on Wednesday.

The office said it received 63 notifications affecting at least 34,000 people in the first five weeks of its new Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, which forces Australian entities to come forward when they believe personal data has been exposed.
