April 11, 2018

South32 is appealing a Colombian court's finding its mine caused health problems to locals.

South32 is appealing a court decision that found waste emissions from the company's Colombian mine and smelter had led to health problems for members of the nearby community.

The company says it is in the process of appealing the Constitutional Court of Colombia's March decision which ordered it to obtain a new environmental license and pay damages to communities affected by the Cerro Matoso operations, after it was found the mine had led to members being diagnosed with health problems including lung cancer.

South32 said it could not assess any potential financial or operation impacts at this stage, but the company is working to understand the impact of the court's decision and will update shareholders of any material developments.
