Sydney restaurateur Mark Caleo says he was "numb" after being told his wife Rita was dead (file).

A Sydney restaurateur accused of soliciting his wife's murder has told a jury he was a mess and in a state of shock when he was called home and told she was dead.

"I was just numb," Mark Caleo said on Tuesday while giving evidence in the NSW Supreme Court.

Earlier, the 55-year-old said he had nothing to do with the murder of his wife's brother, Dr Michael Chye, who was shot dead as he drove into his Woollahra home in October 1989.

Caleo has pleaded not guilty to soliciting his brother in-law's murder and to soliciting the murder of his wife, Rita Caleo, who was stabbed 23 times in their Double Bay townhouse in August 1990.
