Run of jobs growth extends into new year

The unemployment rate was 5.5 per cent in January, lower than an upwardly revised December figure of 5.6 per cent official figures show.

The total number of people with jobs rose by 16,000 in January, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said, with full-time employment decreasing by 49,800 and part-time positions up by 65,900.

Economists had expected the unemployment rate to remain consistent at 5.5 per cent.
