Crews are battling two out of control fires burning in the NSW Hunter region.

An emergency warning has been issued for a bushfire burning in severe fire conditions in the NSW Hunter region.

The Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning after 5pm Wednesday for the bushfire in the Wollemi National Park and Putty State Forest.

People on Bakers and Putty Valley roads were advised to take shelter and were warned "it is too late to leave".

Embers are being blown ahead of the fire, creating spot fires which may impact homes before the main blaze.
