The WA town of Broome is keeping a nervous eye on Cyclone Joyce.

Residents in Western Australia's north are battening down for a category one tropical cyclone which has formed off the Kimberley coast.

A yellow alert has been issued for the area near and around Cape Leveque and the Aboriginal community of Bidyadanga, including the popular tourist town of Broome, as Tropical Cyclone Joyce approaches.

The Department of Emergency Services is warning people to take action and get ready to shelter.
