An overseas tourist has died while hiking the popular Larapinta Trail, west of Alice Springs.

The 33-year-old man had been walking with a companion near Mount Sonder before taking a wrong turn, NT Police Superintendent Rob Burgoyne says.

He was found just after 5pm on Wednesday.

"His partner made it back to the Redbank Gorge carpark and raised the alarm, but, unfortunately, the 33-year-old did not arrive," Supt Burgoyne told ABC radio.

The Larapinta Trail is a bushwalking track which runs west from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder along the West MacDonnell Ranges.
