Victoria's Chief Commissioner is set to meet with key leaders from Melbourne's African community.

Victoria's police chief will meet with leaders from Melbourne's African community after a series of recent high profile crimes involving youths of African appearance.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton returned from sick leave this week into a political controversy over the holiday period incidents, with the federal government accusing the state government of failing to act on the issue.

"The chief commissioner has sought a meeting with key representatives of Melbourne's African Australian community," a Victoria Police spokesman said on Wednesday.
