Abbott's bid to delay marriage bill fails

December 07, 2017

Tony Abbott's attempt to stop progress of the same-sex marriage bill has been voted down.

Tony Abbott has failed in his bid to effectively kill off legislation that would allow same-sex couples to marry.

The former prime minister's amendment to a bill before parliament was voted down on Thursday, allowing it to proceed to the final stages of the process.

Veteran Liberal MP Warren Entsch told MPs that agreeing to Mr Abbott's proposed change would have stopped the progress of the legislation.
