Former NRL player Martin Kennedy has failed to reach a deal on wildlife smuggling charges.

Former NRL player Martin Kennedy and prosecutors have failed to negotiate a deal over allegations of international wildlife smuggling.

In the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday, the 28-year-old's solicitor Ben Wrench said there was an argument over the wording of the charges and a barrister would be briefed for a future committal hearing.

The former Sydney Roosters and Broncos player is accused of importing live animals including Chinese soft-shell turtles, alligator snapping turtles, snakehead fish, freshwater neotropical stingrays and veiled chameleons, and of having two endangered pythons in his possession.

The matter was set down for a one-day hearing on March 27.
