Soccer, rugby fans back same-sex marriage

November 14, 2017

The AFL was one of the sporting organisations to throw its support behind same-sex marriage.

Sports fans appear split along generational lines when it comes to whether or not major sporting organisations should have backed the same-sex marriage campaign.

A survey of more than 1,000 sports fans found 71 per cent of millennials backed the decision by major organisations including the AFL, NRL, Football Federation of Australia and Cricket Australia to publicly support same-sex marriage, while 57 per cent of baby boomers thought it was the wrong move.

Rugby fans were the strongest supporters of the move by the 36 sports organisations that publicly backed same-sex marriage, with three quarters throwing their weight behind the campaign, the poll by YouGov and Monash University found.
