Sixteen other candidates will take on Barnaby Joyce in the New England by-election.

Barnaby Joyce is about to find out how tough the battle will be to retain his NSW seat of New England.

The Australian Electoral Commission is set to declare on Friday the nominees for the New England by-election, triggered by Mr Joyce's resignation after he was disqualified by the High Court over his dual citizenship.

The former deputy prime minister won the seat with 58.5 per cent of the two-party preferred vote in 2016 against nine other candidates.

The December 2 by-election is, so far, known to be contested by Labor, the Greens, Australian Country Party, Countryminded and an independent.
