Australians under 30 are set to be offered discounts on private health insurances.

The Turnbull government is planning a major shake-up of private health insurance, with Australians under 30 expected to be the biggest beneficiaries.

Health Minister Greg Hunt is due on Friday to announce the details, including discounts of up to 10 per cent for younger people.

The changes will also re-categorise policies as either gold, silver, bronze or basic cover and push for a mental health safety net on standard packages.
