A Melbourne man accused of nearly biting off his mother's thumb before setting her house on fire and stabbing two random strangers has faced court.
Damen Stephens was arrested at Cheltenham on Monday following a two-day police man-hunt.
His 66-year-old mother is recovering in the Alfred Hospital and police said she is "extremely fearful" after allegedly being punched and choked by her son last Friday night.
According to court documents, police allege Stephens caused $400,000 worth of damage when he returned to his mother's house in the early hours of Saturday and set her Bentleigh home on fire, completing destroying it.
Later that evening, Stephens was allegedly drinking at a St Kilda bar when he randomly stabbed two strangers aged 44 and 29.
He has been charged with 18 offences including arson, stalking and deliberately causing injury.
Stephens briefly appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court in Thursday and did not apply for bail.
He has pleaded guilty to at least some of the charges.
He was remanded in custody to reappear in court on February 12.
