A man accused of ploughing a stolen truck through Singleton's main street has been denied bail.

A 29-year-old man who allegedly stole a semi-trailer and ploughed it through the main street of a country town in the NSW Hunter region will remain behind bars.

Rodney Johnson is facing 10 charges after the rig crashed and burst into flames on George Street in Singleton on Wednesday morning after taking out five cars and damaging buildings including the Royal Hotel and an antique store.

The matter was heard before Singleton Local Court on Thursday where bail was refused and a mental health assessment was requested.

Johnson is set to reappear at Newcastle Local Court on December 6.
