Shooters hit back as Howard warns on guns

Former prime minister John Howard says the Shooters Party wants to dilute gun control laws.

Former prime minister John Howard has warned voters in two NSW by-elections this weekend of the "dangerous" policies of the Shooters Party, citing Port Arthur and the Las Vegas shooting massacres.

In a letter to the voters in Murray and Cootamundra, co-signed by Nationals stalwart and his former deputy Tim Fisher, he says the Shooters party wants to dilute the tough gun laws his government introduced 21 years ago after Port Arthur.

"Since then, there have been no mass shootings in Australia. In light of recent world events it is clear that these laws have worked well for our country," he says in the letter, published in the Daily Telegraph on Thursday.
