'Bizarro' WA Opposition lashed over gold

Premier Mark McGowan is angry the Liberals are blocking the proposed gold tax.

WA Premier Mark McGowan says the Liberal party has been "grossly irresponsible" by voting to block the gold royalty hike, but says it's not too late to change their decision.

The Labor government needs the Liberals in the upper house to back its plan to lift gold royalty rates from 2.5 per cent to 3.75 per cent in an effort to raise $392 million over four years, with the premier saying the industry can afford it.

But following a $500,000 campaign by the industry, the Liberals took the unusual step on Tuesday of voting as a party to block the state budget measure, saying Labor did not have a mandate to increase gold royalties at the election.

"From opposition they're now wrecking the budget as they did when they were in government," Mr McGowan told 6PR radio on Wednesday.
