Accused trio in court over stolen jewels

Gold dealer Alex Mendieta and two other men have faced court accused of receiving stolen gems.

Police will trawl through 19,000 hours of phone call recordings in their case against three men accused of receiving diamonds and other gems allegedly stolen by armed gangs during raids on Melbourne jewellery stores.

Gold dealer Alejandro Mendieta and two other men appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, accused of receiving stolen goods.

Prosecutor Vivien Jones asked the court for extra time so prosecutors can gather evidence, given there is 19,000 hours of phone recordings and 1200 hours of listening device material to analyse. The case was adjourned to January.
