Former Sydney Roosters NRL player Martin Kennedy is negotiating a deal with prosecutors in court over wildlife smuggling charges.

The 28-year-old has been accused of importing and exporting a number of animals including Chinese softshell turtles, alligator snapping turtles, snakehead fish and shingleback lizards.

In Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday his solicitor Bryan Wrench asked for more time to negotiate the circumstances of a guilty plea with prosecutors, whose offer has largely been accepted but for one charge.
