A man is in hospital under police guard after a standoff of more than 12-hours in Sydney's north.

A woman whose body was found at the base of a north Sydney high-rise may have been the victim of domestic violence, police say.

The woman, aged in her 30s, was found in an alley off Brown Street, Chatswood, early on Monday.

Not long after police were called, her boyfriend appeared on a balcony roof of the 27th floor above the crime scene.

He remained there, often appearing agitated, for more than 12 hours before surrendering after 7pm.

Superintendent Philip Flogel confirmed the pair had been in a relationship for at least a couple of weeks.

"We can say that we believe this may be a domestic violence-related incident," he said on Monday evening.

The man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital under police guard.
