Move to stamp out contraband in detention

September 13, 2017

Peter Dutton has introduced draft laws to stamp out contraband in detention centres.

Authorities will be given greater powers to search for and seize banned items in Australia's immigration detention centres, including mobile phones and drugs.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, introducing new laws on Wednesday, told parliament phones had been used by detainees to organise contract killings, escapes and riots and to access child pornography.

"This government and I will not tolerate behaviour that is illegal or that threatens the stability of detention facilities, placing my officers, visitors or detainees at risk," he said.
