Sainsbury to stand trial on drugs charges

August 10, 2017

A Colombian judge has rejected a plea deal struck with Australian Cassandra Sainsbury.

Cassie Sainsbury could soon find out if her potential six-year term in a Colombian jail will be accepted by the judge hearing her case.

Sainsbury's plea deal was put in doubt last month by her claims she was forced to smuggle drugs or her fiance and family would be killed and the judge suspended the hearing until Thursday to determine it if was legal.

The 22-year-old Adelaide woman was caught at Bogota's international airport in April, trying to smuggle 5.8 kilograms of cocaine inside 18 separate packages of headphones and was facing a 20-year jail term before the plea deal was brokered.
