Building materials supplier James Hardie's first-quarter profit has fallen 34 per cent.

Building materials supplier James Hardie's first-quarter profit has fallen 34 per cent to $US57.4 million ($A72.6 million), partly due to higher production costs.

The company's net sales for the three months to June 30 have grown six per cent to $US507.7 million, compared to the same period last year.

However, the company says its earnings margins were under pressure from greater manufacturing inefficiencies and higher production costs.
