Police to still take lead in terror events

Justice Minister Michael Keenan says police will continue to take the lead in terror events.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan says an overhaul of Australia's defence act allowing army soldiers to respond to terrorism incidents isn't an indictment of state police.

Mr Keenan says the overhaul is about ensuring every resource is available in a terrorist attack and local authorities would always remain the primary responders to any situation.

"Our police and law enforcement are the best in the world ... if it's a situation where we have some specialist capability within the Australian Defence Force, or we had a requirement to use the Australian Defence Force in counter-terrorism response, I think Australians would understand we need to have the most flexible arrangements possible," he said.
