New federal laws will compel tech companies to unlock the encrypted messages of terrorists.

A cabinet minister is not expecting a fight from international tech companies as the government moves to force them to unlock the encrypted messages of terrorists.

The Turnbull government will introduce new laws this year which will also give intelligence agencies stronger powers to remotely conduct surveillance on the phones of jihadis.

"I think if (companies) do try and fight the government trying to protect Australians they'll be on the wrong side of the argument," Christopher Pyne told the Nine Network on Friday.
