Vic Police botch 37-year-old murder case

July 13, 2017

Assistant police commissioner Steve Fontana will comment on the 1980 murder of Maria James.

Police used DNA from an unrelated crime scene to rule out a pedophile priest from a Melbourne mum's murder, it's been reported.

Maria James was murdered in Thornbury in 1980 and local priest Anthony Bongiorno, who is now dead, was ruled out as a suspect based on DNA from a bloody pillowcase which was recently discovered to have come from an unrelated crime scene, ABC podcast Trace reports.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana will provide an update on the investigation on Thursday morning.
